Product Review: Credit Karma (7/10)
Many of us “broke” college students struggle with our financial responsibilities. Whether it’s keeping up with student loans, credit card debt, or taxes, we can’t seem to escape the financial pressures of life. Luckily, BPP reviewed an app that will pay off. Enter, Credit Karma -- your finance confidant! Credit Karma is a safe, secure, & free finance company that helps you keep a grip on your expenses. They provide you with credit reports authorized by bureaus -- Equifax & Transunion -- and follow through with organized data through categories like “payment history” & “available credit.”
CK calculates your credit using VantageScore 3.0 scoring model. CK’s essential scoring simulator helps you make financial decisions that could affect your score. A worry amongst users is “Is my data safe?” Yes, John IT IS! Credit Karma uses 128-bit encryption which is impossible to crack by crazy Russian hackers! Furthermore, the app vows not to sell your info to third parties. CK monitors your credit regularly and makes sure to protect you from identity theft. Now, if there is one thing that all Americans can agree to hate on, regardless of their differences, it is doing their taxes!
Credit Karma has created a tax service that can help you with taxes, free of charge, and possibly get some of that 💲💲 back in your pocket! Another important feature is the Insurance Rate Finder, which allows you to browse auto & home insurance quotes through CK but can be trivial owing to paid sponsors. CK helps with buying a 🏡, 🚗, and even follows through with personal loan updates based on your credit score. Now, this might seem like a lot but the best part is that Credit Karma’s format is simple and user-friendly. NO FORMS, NO REGISTRATION, & NO SPAM. They ask you simple questions with pictures for relevancy and offer options based on your answers.
Room for Growth: With CK being free for users means that they earn revenue through ads which can result in biased choices. The lack of reward options for users is underwhelming and a possible solution for CK is to implement rewards for good credit scores to motivate users to keep spending wisely! Nonetheless, Credit Karma is a great financial app in the market and receives 7/10 from us at Berkeley Product Press.
