Product Review: Fiverr (7/10)
This week's newsletter is sponsored by Fiverr.
UC Berkeley is renowned for producing some of the smartest entrepreneurs, and creators! Many 💡ideas are generated amongst friends in dorms, classes, or at a café but a lot of us don't have the fortune of meeting someone else with a similar perspective. Instead of spending hours finding someone to design you a website, you can use Fiverr to hire a freelancer for your project. Fiverr works by letting buyers pay in advance for "gigs," ranging from web design, to app development, & more.
Function: The BUYER can browse a category of pages or use the search tool to find a "Gig" that they are looking to purchase. Every seller has conditions so its important to read the descriptions of the services offered before hiring the seller. You can even ask the seller questions before hiring them to see if your project aligns with their expertise. The user can add a gig to their list to refer back to. Once the seller is chosen, Fiverr recommends making the purchase through them for secure payment processing. A $1 processing fee for purchases $20 and under & 5% on purchases over $20 is transacted. You have the option to review and request changes before the payment goes through. The SELLER can set their price and choose to offer add-ons to raise the cost. They keep 80%of their earnings on each gig. The more gigs a freelancer sells, the easier it is to build their rating.
Layout: The layout might seem overwhelming at first due to the amount of content on the first page, but the user can get a better sense of the site after spending time scrolling through different gigs. The gigs are posted on the front page based on popularity and rating. Gigs are grouped as Editor's picks, popular gigs, & verified pro services. Fiverr has also expanded its community through podcasts, blogs, and online courses.
Product Pain-Points: Selling a gig on Fiverr is quite challenging. It can be frustrating spending hours trying to market your gig just to have a couple of people interested and then ignore you. Fiverr's support system for freelancers is quite poor and raises many concerns regarding disputes, technical issues, and safety. Lastly, some sellers on the platform are just arbitrators in their work so it’s important to communicate clearly in order to get what you want.
That being said, Fiverr is a growing platform that continues to dominate freelance work and has produced many success stories on both sides of the spectrum. Despite its vulnerabilities, we believe that Fiverr can improve its issues just like other platforms. Berkeley Product Press gives Fiverr a 7/10!
